Traditional wrestling of Leon (Spain) – Lucha Leonesa

Lucha Leonesa (Leon struggle), popularly known as aluche, is one of the oldest native sports of those who survive in spain. Supposed origin of “Asturias” (people in the roman conquest is located in mountains and valleys wet from the river Asturia, Esla today, in the Province of Leon and north of Zamora), but undoubtedly also the fight contagious classic used by the conquerors.

Maintains a strong affinity with other traditional struggles that extend throughout Europe, Asia…in practice, the conservation and survival has been highlighted the role of rural communities, especially of the sheperds, and the presence of traditional culture in the mountains and valleys of Leon. Very briefly the Lucha Leonesa is a sport of hand fighting naked between two contenders, with two hands holding a leather belt with which each is provided, and no one can leave the belt, and trying to throw the enemy, with the use of strategies (“tricks”, “manas”), with names like cadrilada, median, garabito…that are made with arms and legs.

The fighting does not continue ever falls to the ground when one of wrestlers. “los aluches” preserve the traditional character, some rural flavor, but are updated as a sport in a process that starts from the early twentieth century and strengthened in the last quarter of this century, with is building federal, under construction within the spanish federation of struggle and associated disciplines. The unification of variants, a regulation and implementation of the championships as the “provincial” (with thee first celebration in 1931) were crucial for the survival of this form of traditional wrestling, compared to what has happened to other struggles nearby.

Since 1996 is part of the international federation of celtic fights (FILC), attended the wrestlers of Leon, wich Have recently also had a significant presence in the competitions of the international association of struggles to belt (belt wrestling). One of the most experienced of the lucha, a great fighter and professor of sport science at the University of Leon, Jose’ Antonio Robles Tascon, “El Elegante de Campohermoso”, provides information that abundant and well-focused can help us make a brief overview of this struggle: “it is true that “los aluches” and its  practice have always had a great relationship with certain professions such as farmers, sheperds, millers, masons, loggers, etc.

One could say that seeing the evolution of “lucha leonesa” is could understand the economic and social changhes in which it was immersed leon. Moreover, the only “el aluche” is only sport fighter lives in the iberian peninsula of all forms of struggle that existed until this century, as lucha de la cruz (Salamanca), vueltas o maranas (muga de Sayago-Zamora), engarrucha y aluches (Cantarbia), loita (Galicia) luchas or trinchas (Zamora), galholfa (Norte Portugal), baltu (Asturias), valto (concejo de la lomba – Leon), valtio or aluchas (la cepeda – Leon), luche del roncal (Pirineos) and probar a juntar (Baleares)”. “ the lucha leonesa takes place in “corro” (circle), a term that defines both the work of the struggle that the circular space is naturally created when the audience surrounds a pair of wrestlers, and is consolidated with proportions estabilished by law, even today, with built specifically for the purpose.

The current formula for the fight leonesa it is fixed during the twentieth century of which we spoke earlier, having a variety of forms and rules already existing in this period, among which are practiced and very “la luche a brazo partida”, coincides with the mode of the Sardinian Strumpa. Tascon Robles summarizes the current rules: “the left hand is placed at the center of the back of the opponent’s right arm under it, inside the thumb and fingers around the wide tape and closing the press with your thumb. The right hand is placed over the left arm opponent, in the center-left front side, the thumb on the outside from the top to bottom around the waist and other fingers into the belt from the bottom up closing the press with your thumb. The winner is the first in the first minute and half or three (depending on the turn that it) can add more combat score or two falls, which is the most common.

The different forms of scoring are as follows:

-) fall integrates: when you can make contact at odds with the area from the buttocks to the cervical area.

-) medium fall: when the hand is released from the belt, or when you touch the ground with the front or side area”.

“in traditiona practice”, says “el elegante”, - “los aluches the first third of the twentieth century were festive activities, recreational and essential in every pilgrimage festivals of the people. If they had struggles, the party was not party, without aluches had no emotion. The “corro” of fighting usually began with the challenge in the air, “there is someone who fights, or i put on my shoes”…this traditional form survives in one of the “ corros” most interesting: montana vs ribera, in when they turn two regions established in traditional wrestling, as they are divided by a railway line, hulle del norte.

In this traditional competition, one of the smaller wrestlers of one party, launched his challenge, and if the challenge was answered by opponents, fighting one another while remaining on the “corro”, the winner until it is demolished. The last player who remains standing, and the trophy symbolic victory detect is a cock, getting this name also winner, and who has wrought more opponents a “gingerbread”, a sweet bread.

Today, the traditional way of doing this is reserved for special occasions, and the fight is done with the rules regulations that differ from earlier ones, is done in the competition known and individual or liga de verano or the trophy de la regularidad or teams in the previous month and some other competitions including the special treatment has a fight basic (8 to 18 years) is increasing, the female. “ nowadays”, says again Jose Antonio Robles, “much has changed but the environment remains vivid experience.

Keep that in recent years, the audience struggles grew in geometric progression up to 40.000 people who come every summer, paying the entrance, to enjoy their “idols”. The listening volume is more important if one considers that 80% of the population, where they celebrate the struggles they have less than 200 inhabitants and some of them can bring to 2500, multiplying by 10 people. In conclusion we can say that the event is los aluches sports and more people move in the months between June and September in these areas, or better, is the only sporting event after by the public in recent months.

From across the province of Leon is only in its area north-east where more los aluches have roots. Even on the edge of the city of Leon is the place of struggle, this is mainly due to the migration of the people to the capital (up to year 60), has brought the culture and traditions including aluche”.
